Community Safety Photovoice Project in Melrose and Wakefield

 

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), City of Melrose, Town of Wakefield, Melrose and Wakefield Health Departments, Mass in Motion-Melrose/Wakefield, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Melrose Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and WAKE-UP (Wakefield Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition) are collaborating on a Photovoice project in Melrose and Wakefield this May 2014-September 2014.

Photovoice is a participatory action research method by which people can identify, represent, and enhance their community through a specific photographic technique.  It is a fun way for youth to reflect and express their community’s strengths and needs through large and small group discussion of photographs.

This particular project will focus on community safety, be facilitated by an adult and led by chosen high school youth.

We are looking for qualified interested youth to apply!!  Take pictures!  Have your voice heard!

The role of the youth will be as follows: to be trained in Photovoice by a qualified adult facilitator, use photography to document community safety assets and risks, and to prepare as a group a safety summit for stakeholders and decision-makers.  The teen leader and youth positions will begin in May 2014; work and summit must be completed by September 29, 2014.  These positions will be paid.
